6m. Alchins of Ohio and Iowa

It is unknown at this stage where this family originated from in England.

1  ~~  John Alchin

John was born in England in about 1802. He migrated to the United States aboard the vessel ‘Nepos’ arriving at New York in July 1821. He is described as a ‘Gentleman of England. John does not appear in any of the early US census.

John married Lavinia in the early 1830’s; she was born in Pennsylvania in 1802. John and Lavinia had at least six children – Mary (1832), Thomas (1833), Peter (1837), Lucy (1838), Hester (1841) and John (1845).

The 1850 US census records that John was a cabinet maker and he and his wife and their five children were living in Ward 19, New York City. The 1860 census records that John was a cabinet maker and he and his wife and their two unmarried daughters were living at Ward 22 of New York City.

1.1  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was born in New York in 1832. The 1860 census records that Mary was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Ward 22, New York City.

1.2  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was born in New York in 1833. The 1850 census records that Thomas was a rope maker and he was living with his parents at Ward 19, New York City.

1.3  ~~  Peter Alchin

Peter was born in New York in 1837. The 1850 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Ward 19, New York City.

1.4  ~~  Lucy Alchin

Lucy was born in New York in 1838. The 1850 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Ward 19, New York City. The 1860 census records that Lucy was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Ward 22, New York City.

The 1870 census records that Lucy was unmarried and she was living at Ward 19, New York City. No occupation is recorded for her.

1.5  ~~  Hester Alchin

Hester was born in New York in 1841. The 1850 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Ward 19, New York City.

1.6  ~~  John Alchin

John was born in New York in August 1844. The 1850 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Ward 19, New York City. The 1870 census records that John was unmarried and he was working on a farm at Northampton, Summit County, Ohio.

John married Mary in 1888; she was born in Ohio in June 1869. John and Mary had at least seven children – Irving (1888), Clifford (1891), Walter (1893), Everett (1895), Ida (1896), Alice (1898) and Ethel (1904). The 1900 census records that John was a farmer and he and his wife and their six children were living at West Fork, Monona County, Iowa.

The 1910 census records that John was a farmer and he and his wife and five of their children were living at Lake, Monona County. John died during the 1910’s, probably after he moved his family to South Dakota. The 1920 census records that Mary was widowed and she and three of her children were living at Big Sioux, Union County in South Dakota.

The 1930 census records that Mary was living with her married daughter Ida Gross at Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa.

1.6.1  ~~  Irving Alchin

Irving was born in Iowa in November 1888. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at West Fork, Monona County. The 1910 census records that Irving was a labourer and he was living with his parents on their farm at Lake, Monona County.

Irving married Edith Parvat; she was born in South Dakota in 1889 and she already had a child – Edith (1907). The 1920 census records that Irving was a farmer and he and his wife and his step-daughter were living at Logan, Beadle County in South Dakota.

1.6.2  ~~  Clifford Alchin

Clifford was born in Iowa on 16th June 1891. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at West Fork, Monona County. Clifford was not living with his family at the time of the 1910 census.

Clifford married Elvira M; she was born in Iowa on 9th February 1896. Clifford and Elvira had at least two children – Helen (1918), Dorothy (1920), Ruth (1922) and Alberta (1924). The 1920 census records that Clifford was a farmer and he and his wife and their two young children were living at Big Sioux, Union County in South Dakota.

The 1930 census records that Clifford was a farmer and he and his wife and their four daughters were living at Graham, Weld County, Iowa. Clifford died at Kimball, Nebraska in March 1979 aged 87 years. Elvira died at Kimball on 9th April 1993 aged 96 years.

1.6.2.1  ~~  Helen E. Alchin

Helen was born in South Dakota in 1918. The 1920 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Big Sioux, Union County. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Graham, Weld County, Iowa.

1.6.2.2  ~~  Dorothy V. Alchin

Dorothy was born in South Dakota in 1920. The 1920 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with her family at Big Sioux, Union County. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Graham, Weld County, Iowa.

1.6.2.3  ~~  Ruth L. Alchin

Ruth was born in South Dakota in 1922. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Graham, Weld County, Iowa.

1.6.2.4  ~~  Alberta M. Alchin

Alberta was born in South Dakota in 1924. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Graham, Weld County, Iowa.

1.6.3  ~~  Walter Alchin

Walter was born in Iowa in March 1893. The 1900 census records that the school boy was living with his family at West Fork, Monona County. Walter was not recorded with his family at the time of the 1910 census but he was still alive. Walter married Agnes; she was born (possibly in Iowa) on 17th June 1895.

Walter and Agnes had at least two children – Archie (1913) and Hazel (1921). The 1930 census records that Walter was a farmer and he and his wife and their two children were living at Sanders, Yellow Medicine County in Minnesota.

Agnes died at Hanley falls, Yellow Medicine County in April 1986 aged 90 years.

1.6.3.1  ~~  Archie J. Alchin

Archie was born in Minnesota on 16th August 1913. The 1930 census records that the school boyl was living with his family at Sanders, Yellow Medicine County. Archie died at Montivideo, Chippewa County on 13th May 1996 aged 82 years.

1.6.3.2  ~~  Hazel J. Alchin

Hazel was born in Minnesota in 1921. The 1930 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Sanders, Yellow Medicine County.

1.6.4  ~~  Everett C. Alchin

Everett was born in Iowa on 19th August 1895. The 1900 census records that the young boy was living with his family at West Fork, Monona County. The 1910 census records that Everett was living with his family on their farm at Lake, Monona County.

Everett moved with his family to South Dakota. The 1920 census records that Everett was an unmarried labourer and he was living with his widowed mother at Big, Sioux, Union County. Everett moved back to Iowa where he married Mae; she was born in Iowa in 1897.

The 1930 census records that Everett was a mechanic and he and his wife were renting a house for $25 a month at Sioux City, Woodbury County in Iowa. Everett died in Sacramento, California in January 1969 aged 73 years.

1.6.5  ~~  Ida Alchin

Ida was born in Iowa in October 1896. The 1900 census records that the young girl was living with her family at West Fork, Monona County. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Lake, Monona County.

Ida moved with her family to South Dakota. The 1920 census records that Ida was living with her widowed mother at Big, Sioux, Union County. Ida married Joseph R. Gross; he was born in Iowa in 1902. The 1930 census records that Joseph was a baker and he and his wife and his widowed mother in law were renting a house for $31 per month at Sioux City, Woodbury County, Iowa.

1.6.6  ~~  Alice Alchin

Alice was born in Iowa in April 1898. The 1900 census records that the young girl was living with her family at West Fork, Monona County. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Lake, Monona County.

1.6.7  ~~  Ethel Alchin

Ethel was born in Iowa in 1904. The 1910 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Lake, Monona County. Ethel moved with her family to South Dakota. The 1920 census records that Ethelwas living with her widowed mother at Big, Sioux, Union County.
